26

In such a setting is a hamlet

Strewn with green velvet

Kamarpurkar is its name

Worldwide will be its fame.

 

निसर्गाच्या कुशीत सदाबहार

मऊ मऊ मखमलीत हिरव्यागार

वसलं आहे एक छोटसं गाव कामारपूरकर

पसरणार आहे त्याची कीर्ति जगभर

There lives a humble Brahmin

His spouse, devoted women

Khudiram Chatterjee, God's Devotee

Practices virtues with sense of duty

रहात होता तेथे एक ब्राह्मण सदाचारी

नाव होत त्याचं खुदीराम चॅटर्जी

आणि त्याची देवभोळी  सत्यव्रती अर्धांगिनी

होते दोघेही देवभक्त सज्जन आणि सन्मार्गी

 On pilgrimage to Gaya he goes

A wondrous divine dream he sees

The Lord standing with his divine smile

Wonderstruck is the Brahmin without any guile

गेला असता एकदा तो गयेला तीर्थयात्रेस

पडलं त्याला एक अद्भुत स्वप्न पहाटे पहाटेस

होता उभा देव त्याच्या जवळ  गोड हसत

आश्चर्याने ब्राह्मण तो नुसताच राहिला बघत

"As thy son, I will be born

True are these words, just like a mom

Be not afraid, though art My devotee

Live in the world, do thy duty."

``अवतार घेईन तुझ्या घरी होऊन तुझा पुत्र

विश्वास ठेव माझ्यावर शंका नको तिळमात्र

भिऊ नकोस आहेस तू माझा खरा भक्त

सन्नीतीने जगण्यासाठी दक्ष रहा नित्य.''

After all, dream is dream - Khudiram thought

But, to him immense joy it brought

The Lord to be born in his house

He reveals the secret to his spouse.

शेवटी स्वप्न ते स्वप्नच सोडून द्यावं झाल

किती केलं दुर्लक्ष तरी मन खुदिरामचं आनंदाने भरलं

पुत्ररूपाने येणार आता देव आपल्या घरी

गुपित कांतेस सांगितलं त्याने सांगून गोष्ट सारी.

Chandramani Devi is her name

With divine qualities is the dame

To nearby Shiva's temple is her visit

From the image is flood of light.

होतं नाव पत्नीचं त्याच्या चंद्रामणीदेवी

पतिव्रता होती ती शिवभक्त साध्वी

पूजेसाठी गेली असता शिवाच्या मंदिरी

पडले झोत प्रकाशाचे मूर्तीतून बाहेरी.

Engulfed is her body by that light

Overwhelmed is she by that sight

To Shiva fervently she prays

For welfare and peace

आच्छादून टाकली प्रकाशाने तिची दिव्य काया

आनंदाच्या हिंदोळ्यावर मन घेऊ लागलं झोका

अनन्य भावाने करू लागली ती शिवाची प्रार्थना

 सुख आणि शांतीसाठी करी शिव-आराधना

She is kind to all

Even to creature small

All her actions express divinity

As she is an embodiment of purity

In this way the couple pass their days

Experiencing divine bliss and peace

अंतरी होता तिच्या दयाबुद्धीचा भाव

मुंगीसाठीही होता तिच्या अंतरी ठाव

सारे आचरणच तिचे जणु दिव्यत्वाचा गाभा

पावित्र्याची मूर्तीच जणु आणि शुद्धतेची प्रभा

सरत होते अशा प्रकारे त्या दाम्पत्याचे दिवस

घेत अनुभूती त्या दैवी सौख्य शांतीची दिवसानुदिवस.

In a small hut, is the husking machine

In that room our august stranger in born

Birds chirp sweet hum

Flowers emit perfume

Nature heralds the advent of new prophet

Love and knowledge of his are infinite.

झोपडीत एका छोट्याशा होती जिथे भातसडीची जागा

तेथेच जन्मला आमचा हा दैवी लहानगा

गोड गात होते पक्षी सुमधुर

दरवळत होता गंध फुलांचा मधुमधुर

निसर्गच देत होता ललकारी नव्या देवदूताच्या आगमनाची

सीमा नव्हतीच कधी त्याच्या ज्ञानाची आणि प्रेमाची

Gadadhar is his name

In the vernal season he came

In the cottage of Khudiram he is

To neighbours too he gives peace

 

नाव ठेवलं होतं त्याचं गदाधर

त्याच्या आगमनाच्यावेळी वसंत ऋतु होता बहरावर

होता जरी रहात तो खुदीरामाच्या खोपटात

शेजा र्‍या पाजार्‍यांनाही ठेवत असे शांती आणि आनंदात

As healthy graceful boy of five

To the depth of scriptures he can dive

For certain things he has no taste

But the parents are in haste

To the village school, he is sent

To make him scholar, they are bent

हे बाळ गोंडस निरोगी झाले वर्षांचे पाच

तेंव्हाच त्याने गाठला होता श्रुती स्मृतीचा पार

रुची नव्हती त्याला भौतिक गोष्टींची काही

तरी शहाणं करायची त्याला, झाली आई-वडिलांना घाई

घातलं त्याचं नाव त्यांनी तेथल्या गावच्या शाळेत

हुशार करण्यासाठी त्याला, त्यांचे प्रयत्न चालले आहेत.

It is not his nature to fight

To mathematics is his aversion

Arts indeed draw his attention

लिहू वाचू लागला आता बाळ बाराखडी

दंगामस्तीत त्याला रुची नव्हतीच कधी

गणितानेही त्याला हात दिला नाही

कलाक्षेत्र त्याचं मन मोहून घेई.

Torrential are the rains in the rainy season

As if nature is attired in new fashion

Beautiful black clouds envelope the whole sky

Lo, snow-white cranes joyfully do fly.

येई घेऊन वर्षाऋतू धुवाधार पाऊस

पाहून घ्यावा निसर्ग-नखरा आणि त्याच्या शृंगाराची हौस

होई दाटी आकाशात काळ्या काळ्या ढगांची

शुभ्र माळ उडत जाई आनंदात बगळ्यांची

At this moment, Gadadhar is by side of the field

The scene overpowers him with joy untold

Lost to outward sense, he falls down

This type of ecstasy, mortals haven't known.

राहून उभा शेताच्या बांधावर होता निरखत हे दृश्य गदाधर

उचंबळून आनंदाच्या लाटांनी  व्यापला त्याचा हृदयसागर

हरपून गेल देहभान; समाधीत गेला हरवून ; देह पडला खाली

अशा उत्कट आनंदाचा अनुभव सामान्यांना येणार नाही

Gadadhar is seven years old

He is truthful and bold

His father Khudiram falls ill

But he takes it as god's will

Taking the Lord's name, he breaths last

At this untimely blow, the family is aghast

सात वर्षांचा गदाधर होता धीट धाडसी

प्रामाणिक विश्वासार्ह आणि सत्याचा आग्रही

त्याचवेळेस खुदिराम आजारी फार झाले

ईश्वरेच्छा म्हणून त्याने मनाला समजावले

घेत भगवंताचे नाव त्यांनी श्वास अखेरचा घेतला

त्यांच्या अवेळी जाण्याने संसार सारा उधळला.

Gadadhar feels the loss of his father

There is nothing in this world to gather

He is conscious of his duty to his mother

This event unnerves Ramkumar his brother.

झाला हवालदील गदाधर  होता वडिलांचे प्रयाण

नाही शाश्वत जगात काही ही आली त्याला जाण

तरीही करण्यास सेवा आईची झाला तो सावधान

पण प्रसंगानी ह्या रामकुमारदादा घालवून बसला अवसान.

At Anur, Vishalakshi is the deity

Women visit Her temple with piety

In their company is  Gadadhar, the boy

His company is always a source of joy.

`अनुर'जवळ आहे विशालाक्षी देवी

जातात तिच्या दर्शनाला स्त्रिया ठेऊन भक्ती

त्यांच्याच सोबतीने आहे बालक गदाधर

तोच आहे त्यांच्या आनंदाचा सागर.

In praise of the Goddess he sings a song

His voice is melodious like hum of a gong

With religious emotion, in Samadhi overcome

Unknown is this phenomenon to them

ओथंबलेली भक्तिरसात भजने देवीची तो गाई

घंटेसारखा मंजुळ मंजुळ स्वर त्याचा मोही

भक्तीप्रेमाने उचंबळत गाढ गाढ समाधीत तो जाई

अचंबित होत सारे; असलं भक्तिप्रेम त्यांना ठाऊकच नव्हत काही.

They splash water on his face

Useless is the remedy in this case

Overcome are they with grief

Finally, the name of Goddess brings relief.

शिपकारून पाणी चेह र्‍यावर त्या, त्याला जागं करायचा प्रयत्न करीत

समाधिला पाण्याचा उपाय कसा योग्य होईल?

शोकाकूल सा र्‍या स्त्रिया शेवटचा उपाय शोधीत

देवीच्या नामस्मरणानेच मग सारं ठीक होई

Gadadhar is now a boy of nine

With holy thread, he will be fine

Dhani is a blacksmith woman

Ignorant of social norms and canon

 After the investiture of holy thred

From whom the boy is to be fed?

From Gadadhar, there was a promise to Dhani

To the ignorant, all this is funny.

नऊ वर्षाच्या गदाधराची मुंज आता ठरली

लोहाराच्या धानीला कुठुन महित रिती चाली

`पहिली भिक्षा तुझ्याकडून' गदाधरने दिली ग्वाही

बिचार्‍या धानीला अप्रूप त्याचं भारी

Gadadhar wants to keep his promise

The villagers think about it otherwise

Finally Gadadhar wins

From Dhani he receives alms.

 शब्द दिलेला पाळण्याचा निर्धार गदाधरचा पक्का

गावात सर्वांच्या तो विषय ठरला चर्चेचा

अखेरीस सा र्‍या कल्लोळात गदाधरच जिंकला

धानीला प्रथम भिक्षेचा मान मिळवून दिला.

On Shivaratri night, they keep vigil

Prayers and worship make them agile

At Sitanath Pyne's house

Drama of Shiva is the part of vows.

महाशिवरात्रीस गावी मोठा उत्सव होई

रात्रभर जाग्रण आणि गाव भजने गाई

घरी सीतानाथ पायन्यांच्या शिवनाट्य होई

शिवचरित्र साकारण्याची चढाओढ नित्य होई.

The role of Shiva, young Gadadhar is to take

All the villagers happy it would make

Smeared with ash, on the stage he comes

All of them are stunned at once.

विभूती अंगावर लावून  गदाधर व्यासपीठावर येई

शिवाच्या वेशात प्रेक्षकांची मने जिंकून जाई.

Lost in the glory of Shiva, is the boy

There is no limit to his joy

Dead to the world he stands

Unmoving are his limbs and hands.

शिवमहिम्यात हरवून  जाई हा बाळ

आनंदाचा त्याच्या मनात  सुकाळ

जाई संपून जगाची जाणीव सारी

उभा राहे निश्चल हा शिवरूप त्रिशूळधारी.

The performance  there ends

Helpless are his friends

It is the case of trance

Wise men conclude by glance.

नाटकाचा होत असे इथेच शेवट

मित्रही असहाय्यपणे उभे राहत बघत

हीच असते ती समाधी अवस्था

जाणत्यांना कळे एका दृष्टीक्षेपात.

Friendly is he with other boys

Sharers are they of his joys

Assembled under a big mango tree

Fried rice they eat free.

होते सारे बाळगोपाळ त्याचे मित्र जीवलग

त्याच्या आनंदात सहभागी, कोणीच नव्हता अलग

जमत असत सारे ते घनदाट आंब्याच्या सावलीत

मिळून खात फोडणीभात एकमेकांच्या संगतीत

There they dance and sing

Round and round like a ring

Krishna's sports are their theme

They are a very good team.

गोलाकार करून  रिंगण

ते गात आणि नाचत

कृष्णाच्या आठवून लीला

पुन्हा तशाच साकारत
