PROLOGUE / आरंभ

1

Ganesh the god with elephant face

May he protect us in our life journey

May he rescue us from evil ways

Even though his appearance is funny.

देव श्रीगणेश, गणांचा अधिपती गजमस्तक

राहो तोच आमच्या जीवन यात्रेचा रक्षक

करो तोच परावृत्त आम्हाला पापाचरणातून

जरी असले त्याचे रूप गमतीदार अन् विलक्षण

"Why is He elephant-faced?

Why has He got pot belly?"

Because this world is very crooked

Because our life is funny and silly

By his grace the crooked world becomes God's pedestal

Life becomes sweet and gives joy eternal.

`` का बरे हा गजवदन

का बरे हा विशाल उदर? ''

जग म्हणजे तरी काय? -- चक्रव्यूहाची भुलावण

जीवन आपले कधि हास्यास्पदतेची कमाल; तर कधि  मूर्खतेची कमान

वक्रतुण्डच करो सारे जग नंदनवन

त्याच्याचमुळे आनंदाची निस्यंदिनी हृदि स्त्रवते निरंतर; होते सुमधुर हे जीवन

May Sarswati, the goddess of learning,

Keep the fire of knowledge burning

She is goddess of Virtue and beauty

May she lead us in our path of duty.

देवी सरस्वती विद्येची

ठेवो तेवत हृदयी ज्योत ज्ञानाची

देवी ही अनंत गुणांची; खाणी सौंदर्याची

ठेवो कर्तव्यपथी आम्हास ही आस आमच्या मनीची

Tedious is the life's voyage

And distant is the port

Heavy is the baggage

It requires a constant effort

किती गुंतागुंतीचा हा जीवन प्रवास

किनाराही दिसेना डोळ्यास

ओझेही जड झाले माथ्यास

तरीही प्रयत्नांची सोडता कामा नये कास

God's name is the boat

faith is the favourable wind

It requires effort great

And also help from the Unseen Hand

Crossing the Ocean of misery

It can't be done in a hurry.

भगवंताचं नाम हीच खरी नाव

श्रद्धा हाच अनुकूल वात

अपार कष्टांनी करावी लागते संकटांवर मात

तेंव्हाच मदतीला येतात `त्याचे' न दिसणारे हात

करतांना दुःखाचा समुद्र पार

चालत नाही माणसा करून धांदल फार.

In this vast world of men

There is a beautiful land called Ind;

And it gets plenty of rain

In this land east of Sind.

ह्या माणसांच्या विशाल जगात

आहे एक सुंदर प्रदेश `हिंद'

पाऊस करतो तेथे जमिनीला तृप्त

आहे त्याच्या पश्चिमेला भूभाग सिंध

The great national sin is the neglect of the masses

For our downfall that is one of the causes

No amount of politics would be of any use

Until our people are free from abuse

जनता जनार्दनाकडे पाठ हेच आमचे राष्ट्रीय पाप

अनेक कारणांपैकी हेही कारण आहे आपल्या अधोगतीचं आज

थांबत नाहीत जोवर त्यांच्यावरील अत्याचार  आणि अन्याय

तोवर केलं कितीही राजकारण त री त्याचा उपयोग काय?

India is the land of religion

In India religion is the only occupation of life

Our strength is in our religion

It is the keynote of the music of national life.

भारत हे तर पूर्वापारचं धर्मक्षेत्र

आज धर्माचं स्थान राहून गेलं पोट भरण्यापुरतं

खरे तर आपली ताकद आहे आपला धर्म

हाच तो सुसंवादी सूर आपल्या संस्कृतीचा; अन् जीवनाचे मर्म

Lacking we are in faculty of organization

This drawback produces all sorts of evil

Obedience is the first requisite for organization

Useless is our habit of cavil

चालायच ध्येयपथावर सर्वांनाच एकत्र घेऊन

इथेच खाल्ला मार आम्ही; कमी पडली आमची  शिकवण

त्यामुळेच होत आहे वाईटाची चांगल्यावर मात

सुसंस्कारांचा आणि आमचा सर्वस्वी घात

शिस्त हीच आहे प्रथम पायरी संघटनेची

नाही तर व्यर्थ आहे दवंडी आम्ही सुसंस्कृत असल्याची

Before you there is a goal

You have to try Heart and soul

Go on trying until you succeed

Any help do you need?

आहे नजरेसमोर आपल्या एक ध्येय जीवनाचं

एक करून आकाश-पाताळ आपणच ते मिळवायचं

हाती गवसेपर्यंत लढायचं, झुंजायचं

मग गरजच काय  दुस र्‍यांच्या मदतीची?

 दुस र्‍यांच्या तोंडांकडे का बघायच?

आणि आशाळभूतासारखं मदतीसाठी झुरायचं?

A debt immense the world owes to our motherland

The patient Hindu, mild Hindu, look at him

Indian thought has permeated in every land

You yourself can see if your vision is not dim.

लागत खूप देणं हे जग माझ्या मायभूमीचं

सोशिक हिंदू, सहनशील हिंदू, हळुवार कोमल, सौम्य हिंदू

झिरपत गेले आहेत भूमी भूमीत हिंदू विचार

झाली नसेल नजर अधू तर दिसेल तुम्हालाही त्यांचा सहज संचार

India is cultural and social mosaic

There is a strong moral fabric

When we lost our sense of values

Reduced are we to molecules

No doubt, the country has fallen

But will surely rise again

सांस्कृतिक आणि सामाजिक सौहार्दाच्या रंगांनी सुंदर

विणला आहे भारतीयत्वाचा कशिदा मनोहर

विशुद्ध नैतिकतेचा धागाही आहे  मजबूत

त्यामुळेच भारतरूपी पट आहे भक्कम आणि शाबूत

उधळून दिली आम्ही आमची नैतिक मूल्ये वार्‍यावर

आणि उरलो ते तुच्छ धूलीकण फिरणारे हवेवर

दिसतो आहे मग नजरेसमोर निश्चित आमचा र्‍्हास

पण उठून उभे राहू पायावर आमच्या एक दिवस हाच ध्यास

In India religion has come to be static

We went to make it dynamic

It must be as free as god's air

Then only everything would be fair 

डबक्यातल्या पाण्यासारखा आज शेवाळला आहे धर्म

फोडून त्याचा बांध करणार आम्ही तो बंधमुक्त

अवकाशात पसरलेल्या भगवंताच्या हवेसारखा मुक्त

त्यानेच होईल सारे अलबेल आणि जग सशक्त

Devoted are Indians to Gayatree, Gangaa and Geeta

Indian ideal of womanhood is Savitree and Seeta

Spirituality is the basic of Indian unity

Sanskrit is the language of the community.

फार मानतात भारतीय गंगा, गीता अन् गायत्री

आहे भारतीय स्त्रीत्वाचा आदर्श सीता आणि सवित्री

आहे अध्यात्म हीच भारतीय एकात्मतेची गंगोत्री

आणि मातृभाषा भारतीयांची संस्कृत ज्ञानदात्री

Self-control is the life-force of this civilization

Enjoyment is not its goal, only a preparation

               This life is an introduction to the next

The meaning is understood, clear is the context

मनाला लगाम हाच भारतीय संस्कृतीचा आत्मा

जीवन आहे एक पूर्व परिचय पुढच्या प्रवासाचा

उपभोग हे ध्येय नाहीच कधी! फक्त तयारी पुढच्या प्रवासाची

उमगला आहे संदर्भ आणि अर्थ; निमाला आहे भास

Religion is the backbone, the bedrock, the foundation

Upon which is built edifice of the nation

Religion is the sole interest of Indian people

To the Indian eyeit is the only apple.

धर्म हाच आहे देशाचा कणा, भक्कम पाया, प्रस्तर पक्का

उभा आहे ज्याच्यावरच देशाचा भव्य डोलारा

हिंदुत्त्व आहे सा र्‍य़ा भारतीयत्त्वाचा गाभा

सा र्‍या भारतीयांच्या नयनांचा तारा.

To North stand the Himalayas mighty

Highest peaks of the world in these mounts

Abode of Shiva, the great deity

And also many many founts

आहे त्याच्या उत्तरेस भव्य आणि विशाल पर्वत हिमालय

आहेत जगातील सर्वात उंच शिखरे येथेच महाकाय

वसले आहे येथेच शिवाचे वसतिस्थान कैलास

आणि चालतो येथे निर्झरांचा अखंड पदन्यास

Not only of ordinary water

But also of bliss eternal;

Ganges among them, the purifier,

Removing all desires carnal.

नाही ते जल साधे सुधे पाणी

आहे ते तर शाश्वत आनंदाची अनुभूती

त्यांच्यातीलच ही आहे गंगा भागिरथी

करते तिच्या निर्मळ स्पर्शाने पवित्र मानवजाती

धुवून टाकते सारी भौतिक विषयांची आसक्ती

The king of mountains stand in all his glory

Surveying the land full of benediction

Receiving offerings without any fury

With all kindness and full of affection.

 आहे सम्राटाच्या थाटात उभा सा र्‍या पर्वतांचा मुकुटमणी;

आश्वासक हिमगिरी जणु चिंताहर चिंतामणी

त्याच्याच आशीर्वचनात चिंब ही भारतभूमी

नाही कुठलाच प्रकोप; करत राहतो कल्याणवृष्टी

करतो मायेची पखरण; नाही पडू देत दुःखाची सावली

असा हा दयार्द्र दयाळू हिमालय हिमगिरी

In those hills ascetics require no effort

The mind automatically goes Godward;

Even the Mountain which is inert

Is symbol for everything that goes forward

नाही करावे लागत हिमालयाच्या परिसरात योग्यांना  श्रम

धावते मन देवाकडे आपोआप विनाश्रम

जरी असल्या ह्या पर्वतरांगा गतिहीन, अचल, निश्चल

तरी आहेत त्या प्रतिक गतिशील जीवनाचे चपखल

For ages men seeking God have come here

And living in peace, without fear;

Have realized the Lord as very personal

And also here the supreme is Impersonal.

येत राहिले देवाच्या शोधात येथे, लोकं युगे युगे

प्राप्त करत मनःशांती अत्यंत निर्भय मनाने युगे युगे

घेत प्रचिती हृदयस्थ परमात्म्याची युगे युगे 

आणि ते सर्वश्रेष्ठ सनातन तत्त्व विश्वात्मक असल्याची प्रचिती घेत येथे युगे युगे

Attired in snow stands Himavan, the king of mountains,

Because snow is symbol of purity;

As the saying goes "as old as mountains"

Because mountain is symbol of eternity  

 

आहे उभा हा हिमावन पांघरून शुभ्र हिमवस्त्र

जणु केले आहे परिधान पर्वतसम्राटाने धवल हे राजवस्त्र

 आहे हिम प्रतिक पावित्र्याचं

अन्तर्बाह्य निर्मळतेचं विशुद्धतेचं

आहे प्रचलित वाक्प्रचार, `पर्वतासारखा पुरातन'

प्राचिनतेचं प्रतिक आहे पर्वत हा सनातन

His two daughters are Uma and Ganga

Uma is divine consort of Siva, the great God

In Himalaya is the origin of Ganga

And Kailasa is Siva's abode.

उमा आणि गंगा त्याच्या दोन मुली

उमेचा पति आहे तो विश्वेश्वर चंद्रमौळी

घेते गंगा जन्म हिमालयाच्या कुशीत

आणि कैलासावर आहे शिवाचा निवास खचित.

Ganga is mother of all

Acceding to Bhagiratha's call

From the heaven She has to fall

To purify Her children all.

सर्व भूतमात्रांची माता, गंगामाता

ओ देत भगीरथाच्या हाकेला, अवतरली भूतली आता

स्वर्गातून कोसळला धरेवर तिचा प्रपात

करण्यासाठी तिच्या लेकरांना निर्मळ आणि अपाप

From Himalaya does she flows

Towards lands lying low

To the east flows Ganga

Ending in the Bay of Bengal.

करीत हिमालयाच्या कडे खांद्यावर पदन्यास

कडेकपारीतून खाली उतरली ही पुण्यरास

पूर्वेकडच्या उतारावर वाहत राहिली सावकाश

गंगा-सागरास मिळण्याची धरून मनी आस.

In this great land of Ind

The days of glory came to an end

Hordes of aliens came here

Land of virtue became land of fear.

अशा ह्या उज्ज्वल भारताची कीर्ति अक्षय

झाली ग्रहण लागल्यागत क्षीण; पावली क्षय

परकीयांच्या लोंढ्यांनी केली मलीन ही भूमी

कल्याणस्वरूप ही गुणखाणी उरली किंकाळ्यांची भयभूमी

Finally the British became victorious

An empire they were able to establish

Calcutta as the seat of administration

There was no end to humiliation

In such an unbecoming situation

There was a need of an incarnation.

अखेरीस झालेच इंग्रज विजयी

फडकवला त्यांनी भारतावर युनियन जॅक दुःखदायी

कलकत्ता झाली त्यांच्या कारभाराची राजधानी

अपमानांना उरलीच नाही कुठली गणती

अत्याचारांच्या काळोखात बुडत असता भारतभूमी

शोधत होते सारे आशेची एक तिरीप, एक दिशादर्शक चांदणी

Salutation to those who have Godlike-nature

There teachings and lives we have inherited

Salutation to those who are coming in the future

Their greatness enables the word to get benefitted.

त्रिवार वंदन त्या देवतुल्य महापुरुषांना

आठवतो आपण त्यांना, त्यांचाच वारसा पुढे चालवतांना

त्रिवार वंदन भविष्याच्या गर्भात जे आकार घेत आहेत त्याही महापुरुषांना

ज्यांच्या थोरवीवरच हे जग दिसेल बहरतांना.

Higher and nobler than all ordinary ones

Son of God and other persons

We see God through them

Indeed, they are the devotee's heart's gem.

 

उच्च आणि उदात्त विचारांचे हे विचारवंत

ईश्वराचे अंश आणि इतर प्रतिभावंत

त्यांच्यामधूनच साकार होतं देवत्व आपल्या नेत्रांच्या समोर

खरोखर तेच असतात भक्तांच्या कंठातील चिंतामणी चिंताहर

God understands human failings

He is touched by our wailings

To establish virtue is his incarnation

To destroy evil is his manifestation.

माहित असतात परमेश्वराला माणसाच्या उणीवा आणि दोष

हेलावून जातो तो ऐकून आपला हृदयद्रावक आक्रोश

असतो त्याचा अवतार गुणाच्या पुन्हा प्रतिष्ठापनेसाठीच

प्रकट होतो तो पाप आणि अभद्राचा नाश करण्यासाठीच

We are only little bubbles

We have to face troubles

Giants not affected by the world mortal

They stand undying, eternal.

आपण तर फक्त बुडबुडे

लाटांच्या थपडा खात जगणारे बापुडे

महापुरुष ढळत नाहीत ह्या जगात अशाश्वत

दीपस्तंभच असतात ते; देतात प्रकाश शाश्वत

"No man has seen God but Son"

Where shall we see God but in the Son?

You and I embody that Lord

But we must remember his Word

नाही आजवर पाहिला कोणी देव; पण पाहिला त्याचा पुत्र

शोधावं तरी कुठे देवाला? नक्कीच असतोच तो त्याच्या पुत्रात मात्र

आहोत तुम्ही आम्ही त्या भगवंताचाच दृश्य अंश

पण लक्षात घ्यायला पाहिजे आपण त्याचा उपदेश

Better than vain imaginations of God

Krishna and Budha are a higher idea of God

They always command our adoration

It is open to all to worship an incarnation

 

चाचपडण्यापेक्षा अंधारात देवाच्या कल्पना तरी ब र्‍या

कल्पनेपर्यंत देवत्त्वाच्या पोचतात बुद्ध आणि कृष्णा

हवी भगवंताला फक्त निर्मळ भक्ती; देव भावाचा भुकेला

मोकळीक आहे सर्वांनाच त्यांना पूजायाला

You have to worship God as man

Blessed are those who have such a "God-man"

That is the natural way to see Gad

Concentrated there are all views of God

पूजावा लागतो देव, आपल्याला मानवरूपात

नाही त्याहून काही वेगळी रीत-भात

मिळाला ज्यांना ``देव-माणूस'' पूजा करावा असा

आहेत खरोखरीच ते मोठे भाग्यवान बघा

गुंतागुंतीची अनेक मते देवासंबंधी असता

हाच आहे मार्ग सर्वमान्य  आणि सोपा

Life goes on without shame

Indifferent to praise or blame

Helpless is our young man

Help him if you can

सरत राहतं आयुष्य असच मुर्दाडपणे

निरस परंपराग्रस्त; ना स्तुत्य ना दोषी; नुसतेच दांभिकपणे

असते असहाय्य आपलीच तरुण प्रजा

असेल शक्य तर, द्या त्यांना मदतीचा हात; जा

Two aspects of the truth Absolute

Static and dynamic, abstract and concrete

Shiva and Shakti, Male and Female

Creation is their role

दोन असतात बाजू त्याच एकमेव शाश्वत सत्याच्या

स्थाणु आणि गतिमान; विश्वव्यापी आणि नेति नेति

शिव आणि शक्ती; पुरुष आणि प्रकृती

काम त्यांचे असते जगाची निर्मिती

Kali is the consort of Kaala, the Time

Being power of time, She devours all

In creation, there is no reason & rhyme

It is her play, that is all 

समय किंवा काळाचीच पत्नी आहे काली

काळाचीच शक्ती ती! गिळून टाकते सर्वकाही

नाही काही कारण निर्मितीचं कुठलं; त्यात काव्यही नाही

काली! तीच आहे लीला-नाटक-सूत्र-खेलनकरी

The passage of time is never stright,

Beyond any description it is;

Days are not at all bright,

For us where is peace?

नसतोच कधी सरळ काळाचा मार्ग

आहे शब्दांच्या पलिकडे जाणत नाहीत त्याला गात्रं

नसतात दिवस सगळे उज्ज्वल आणि पवित्र

शांतीच्या शोधात आम्ही फिरत राहतो सर्वत्र

If there is no devotion, world becomes hell

About it, more we need not tell

Guided by Maya, we go round and round

It is all fury and sound

नसेल जर भाव आणि भक्ती, तर जग म्हणजे नर्काची प्रचिती

त्याच्याविषयी नकोच बोलणे अजून काही उक्ती

अज्ञानाच्या भोव र्‍यात गोल गोल फिरण्याची येथे मायेची सक्ती

इतकच सांगतो तुम्हाला जीवन म्हणजे भय आणि शांती

Physical, mental and accidental are the causes three

Sufferings are undergone by the bound soul

May our Master make us free

May he help us to reach the goal

शारिरीक, मानसीक आणि दैविक असतात कारणे/गति तीन

भोगत राहतो जीव त्याच्या  वाट्यास आलेलं नशीब

करो आमचा स्वामी आम्हासी संसार-पाशातून मुक्त

तोच करो मदत आम्हा होण्यासाठी ध्येयाकडे आसक्त

"Wonderful is the power of intellect

We need not worry about our conduct"

That is the pursuit of worldly wise man

Improve him, if you can.

In the same intellect are the good and bad

That is why we are always Sad

O Master, save me from such intellect

Help me to make my life perfect.

``आहे विस्मयकारक शक्ती आपल्या बुद्धीची

सांगितली कोणी आहे करायला पर्वा आपल्या वर्तणुकीची''

करतात प्रतिपादन असे जगभरचे बुद्धीप्रामाण्यवादी

करावे शक्य झाल्यास मतपरिवर्तन अशांचे जे आहेत पाखंडी

हे भगवंता ! वाचव तूच मला तडाख्यातून ह्या पाखंड्यांच्या

कर मार्गदर्शन सद्वर्तनाचे आयुष्याचे कल्याण साधावया

Religion appropriate to the present age

Not known to many sage

To propagate it is Master's incarnation

To bless the mankind is his

 

असेल वर्तमानकालासाठी जो सुयोग्य धर्म

नाही कळले अनेक संतांनाही ज्याचे वर्म

सर्वांना उपदेशिण्यासाठीच तो कल्याणकारी स्वधर्म

घेतो अवतार पृथ्वीवर देव; दूर करण्यासाठी अधर्म

Bengal is a land where many rivers flow

On the north is the Himalaya with snow

The great abode of purity is Mother Ganga

Flowing in this land of Bengal.

आहे केला अनेक नद्यांनी  बंगाल सुपीक, सुपरिचित

उभा आहे उत्तरेस त्याच्या हिमालय बर्फाच्छादित

तेच आहे आमच्या पवित्र गंगामातेचे माहेरघर

बंगालमधूनच वहात वहात ती गाठते सागर

Beautiful is the rural scenery

With plenty of greenery

Vast stretch of paddy field

All around it is green

While harvesting it is colour of Gold

To enjoy the beauty , it is to be seen.

दिसुन येते गावागावातून येथे नयनरम्य दृश्य

हिरवे गार गालिचे सृष्टीने पसरले आहेत भव्य

डुलत असते हिरवे लुसलुशीत भात जेथे पहावे तेथे

नजरही नाही ठरणार इतक्या लांबवर पसरलेली असतात भात-शेते

येता दिवस सुगीचे होतात शेते सोनेरी

लुटण्यासाठी हा आनंद , जरूर असते सौंदर्य टिपणा र्‍या नजरेची

Water flows in canals and brooks

With murmuring sound

Unconcerned of outside world, it looks

Lo, how fertile is the ground.

पाटातून, झ र्‍यातून पाणी वाहे अवखळ

नाद त्याचा घुमत राही आसमंतात खळखळ

जगाविषयी बाहेरच्या ते उदासीन आणि तटस्थ

पहा येथील भूमाता सुपीक आणि भारदस्त

Cow and goat graze here and there

Ego of the onlooker, they are unaware

With the green grass they are contented

Reminding us the thing required at the end

चरत असतात गायी गुरे निवांत पुंजक्या पुंजक्याने

मानवी अहंतेची त्यांना कल्पनाही नसते

तुष्ट आणि आनंदी असतात ते  थोडक्या हिरव्या चा र्‍यावर

आठवण करून देतात जणु `अंती काय लागेल तुला हे नरवर'

The farmer comes to the field with his plough

Unable to answer why and how

But, faith he has in the Lord of the universe

That is why he has no worries.

येतो शेतकरी शेतात; टाकून खांद्यावर  नांगर

कधि आणि केंव्हाचे त्याला माहित नसते उत्तर

पण विश्वास असतो पूर्ण त्याचा श्री विश्वेश्वरावर

म्हणूनच चिंता नसते त्याला कुठलीही कणभर

Children are at play

Throughout the day

At the approach of dusk

They are asleep Quick.

खेळत राहतात मुले, सारं विसरून दिवसभर

जरा उजाडल्यापासून ते अंधार होईस्तोवर

म्हणूनच गाढ झोपी जातात दमून भागून लवकर

 झोप लागते त्यांना पडल्या पडल्या अंथरुणावर

Trees are bent

Laden with fruit

Reminding us the adage

Humility gives privilege

आहेत वाकली झाडे फळांच्या ओझ्यानी

आठवण करून देतात जुन्या एका म्हणीची

`येता अंगी नम्रपण देई देव वरदान'

विनयाचाच असतो विजय त्यालाच मिळतो मान

Hills stand above and high

No source of water nearby

It is true after all

Pride comes before fall

 

उंचच उंच टेकड्या उभ्या गर्वाने छाती फुगवून

पण नसतो त्यांच्याजवळपासही पाण्याचा एक टिपुस

खरच म्हटलं आहे कोणीतरी,

उन्मत्तता हीच असते  र्‍्हासाची पहिली पायरी
